Subject: The evils of street begging
Sir,
Will you please allow me a column in your esteemed and well-circulated daily to jot down my deep concern over the growing evils of street begging in the city of Kolkata for the favourable action of the Govt.?
The number of beggars is increasing on a large scale in the city of Kolkata day by day. Very often, they are found begging for alms in the streets, at the entrance of the temples, mosques, churches, railway and metro stations. Now the daily commuters are highly worried and vexed by their nuisance. In the guise of beggars, they are contributing to all sorts of evil and anti-social activities. Very often, they are found involved in smuggling drugs, kidnapping children, stealing purses, selling weapons and even working as spies as a part of miscreants. Whenever anyone refuses to give alms, he or she becomes the victim of insulation, molestation and physical and mental harassment. They also keep the footpaths and the streets unclear and cause obstruction to the smooth walking along the footpaths or streets. Now the city dwellers are not at ease with the growing evil works of the beggars.
To ensure a safe journey and to curb the evils of the beggars, the Govt. of West Bengal is hereby requested to take effective action as early as possible.
Yours faithfully
Joy Sarkar
Thanking you,
