How to Use Conditioner on Hair – Perfect Guide For You!

How to Use Conditioner on Hair

Conditioner is the most important product that everyone must use after using shampoo. The shampoo is very essential for our hair to clean the dirt, sweat, dead skin cells and unessential particles from our scalp and hair length. But if you do not use conditioner after using shampoo, your hair will surely become unmanageable, dry and rough.

To properly clean the hair, we need a sufficient amount of foam. So, most shampoo manufacturing companies add chemicals like sulfate and parabens to their shampoo to produce sufficient foam. Though it cleans our hair well, these chemicals are harsh to our hair follicles. So, after shampooing, our hair loses its natural oil. As a result, it becomes dry, dull and frizzy. A conditioner is something that can reduce the problem.

Why should you use a conditioner?

Our hair becomes rough, frizzy and damaged from colouring, blow-drying, pollution and many more reasons. When the hair is repeatedly rubbed in different ways, it is pulled while styling, and then split ends are created in the hair. Even shampoo also destroys the nourishment of our hair. But you can overcome all these problems using a good conditioner after shampooing. Conditioner restores the natural oil and nourishment that our hair loses after using shampoo. It contains alcohol, emollients and essential oils which make our hair shiny and healthy. It also reduces the chance of split ends

But you will not get effective results even if you use conditioner unless it is the right choice for your hair and does not use it correctly. So, in today’s article, we will know how to choose the best conditioner for your hair and how to use it properly. So, let’s start.

Before knowing the application, let’s know how many types of conditioners are available there in the market.

How many types of conditioners are there in the market?

Mainly there are three types of conditioners –

  1. Rinse-out conditioner or regular conditioner
  2. Leave-in conditioner
  3. Deep conditioner

1. Rinse-out conditioner or regular conditioner

A regular conditioner is ideal for normal or oily hair. It is generally used by most people after shampooing. Regular conditioner helps to repair the damage to your hair caused by daily basis pollution, heat and wear and tear. Regular conditioner is also known as a rinse-out conditioner because you should use it just after you rinse out your hair with shampoo and you have to rinse out it only after 3-4 minutes of using it.

2. Leave-in conditioner

Leave-in conditioner means you can leave the conditioner on your hair as long as you wish (but not more than 2 or 3 days). It has no need to rinse out from your hair after applying. It makes a layer on your hair strands so that your hair is not affected by the heat treatment, pollution and wears and tear that your hair faces on a regular basis.

3. Deep conditioner

If you have extremely dry, damaged and frizzy hair, then I will highly recommend you to use a deep conditioner. The purpose of the deep conditioner is the same as the regular and leave-in conditioner. No doubt all of them make hair shiny and silky, but deep conditioners give a much better effect to extremely damaged and unmanageable hair. It repairs the damage of your hair caused by daily styling, colouring and heat treatment of your hair and restores the natural moisture of your hair.

How to use a Regular Conditioner?

To get the best result from a regular conditioner, follow these steps while using a regular conditioner.

Step 1. Choose the right conditioner for your hair type

There are lots of varieties of the regular conditioners of so many brands in the market. It often confuses us to choose the best one for our hair. But you should go for that conditioner which suits your hair type and budget also. Suppose, you have curly hair, then you can go with any conditioner of a trusted brand which is specially formulated for curly hair. Or, if your hair is straight, then you can go with any good brand. But you should always check the ingredients if they contain harmful chemicals like – sulfate and parabens. Don’t use any conditioner that contains harmful ingredients like these.

Step 2. Wash your hair with shampoo

Before using a regular conditioner, you must clean your scalp and hair strands properly with your favourite shampoo. If you don’t do the cleaning process properly, there will be a layer of excess chemicals from your shampoo on the hair which will not let the conditioner do its work properly.

Step 3. Squeeze your hair

After shampooing, you have to squeeze your hair very gently with the help of your hand to get the excess water out. Otherwise, if you apply conditioner on hair without squeezing it, the conditioner will not be set on the hair and you will not get an effective result.

Step 4. Divide your hair into two portions

Divide your hair into two sections and bring them to the front of your shoulders. This step makes the process of applying the conditioner easier.

Step 5. Apply conditioner

After the above steps, it’s time to apply the conditioner that you have chosen for your hair. Put the amount of conditioner on the palm of your hand as much as you need according to your hair length. If your hair is short in length, then a little bit of conditioner is enough. But, in the case of long hair, it requires more quantity. After taking the conditioner, rub it well with both the palms of your hands. Then run it gently through the hair strands. Never apply conditioner on your scalp. You should use conditioner on the hair length only. Be more careful with the ends of your hair strands because they need more nourishment and moisture. If conditioner is applied on the scalp, your hair follicles become clogged and the scalp becomes oily.

Step 6. Let the conditioner set

This is quite important step. The longer you can apply it to your hair, the better results you will see in your hair. If you are in a hurry, you have no choice but to wash your hair immediately. But I suggest you to wash your other body parts after applying the conditioner. As a result, the conditioner will be set on your hair properly and you do have not to waste your time. It must take 2-3 minutes to wash your other body parts which is enough time to let the conditioner set.

Step 7. Rinse-out the conditioner

Now we are in the final step. To rinse out your hair, normal water is the best choice. But, if you want a comfortable shower then you can go with lukewarm water which is a better option rather than hot water. Rinse out your hair thoroughly taking a few minutes. The more time you will give to this process, the healthier your hair will become because if the conditioner is not washed out properly, your hair can face side effects of the product. After a few minutes, when you feel your hair soft and smooth but not super slithery, then stop the washing process and you are done conditioning.

How to use a Leave-in Conditioner?

If you follow the steps mentioned below while using a leave-in conditioner, then you must get the best result.

Step 1. Choose a right Leave-in Conditioner for your hair

There are two kinds of leave-in conditioners in the market – 1. Cream and 2. Serum. But you will definitely get a wide variety of leave-in conditioners of different brands like regular conditioners. As the first one slightly weighs down the hair strands, it is better to use on thick and curly hair. But the second type goes well with thin and straight hair as it is lighter in weight. But you can use both of them if you have wavy hair.
